“This is just who I am”

“This is who I wound up being”

So often I see people feeling stuck where they are. Feeling like whatever their Enneagram test or Myers Brigg’s says, that’s their destiny. But I’m here to tell you that you do not have to feel stuck with where you are now. In fact, it can really stifle our emotional growth to think that way.

Now that’s not to say that these tools aren’t helpful. We’ve all felt comforted by reading our horoscope, or by sharing our personality quiz results with our friends. It makes us feel comfortable and safe. It can sometimes help explain our behavior And sometimes (especially in our vulnerable moments) that is exactly what we need. We need to be able to point at a specific reason or person or experience that led us here.

The environment we were raised in has a huge influence on why we are the way we are now. But that’s all that it is – an influence. It is not destiny. It is not written in the stars. Only YOU have the power to decide who you want to be!

So next time you get stuck in a sticky situation, instead of thinking “well that’s just who I am” try saying “This is who I wound up being. This is who I am right now, but that doesn’t mean this is who I’ll always be.”

This week, I challenge you to sit down and write for 15 minutes using the prompt “I’ve changed so much in the past 10 years, and I’m continuing to change everyday”. Whatever comes to your mind or heart, write it down! How have you changed? What caused these changes? What changes might be coming on the horizon? How do they make you feel? Sometimes a short stream of consciousness writing session is exactly what we need to release the pressure we’re feeling in our minds. Try to write without picking up your pen!

Change is scary, but it shows that we’re working hard and facing new challenges. You don’t have to feel stuck with who you are now, or where you’re at now. You’re a product of your experiences, and we are all capable of change.

Let me know how your journaling goes, or any other thoughts on this idea on my instagram page!

Can’t wait to hear from you,
Amanda
